I Was Given an Award

I’m not in to bragging or anything.  Just tryin’ to do my own little thing in my own little corner of the world.  But Grandma Lisa from Grandma Briefs has awarded me the Honest Scrap Award.  Honest, she has!  Woot, woot!!

The good part is that I need to pass the award along to 7 others whose blogs I find brilliant in content and/or design.  No problem there.

Then, I have to share ten honest things about myself.  Yikes!  Ten? Are you kidding me? How about nine?  After all, my name is Nina . . .  it rhymes with nine.  Do I hear six?  Six?  Six?  Six, anyone?

Ten, you say?  Oh, alrighty then. Here goes.  Ten things about me.

1.  I am brilliantly boring.  White paste on a white piece of paper is more dazzling than I.
2. I love to read the dictionary.  Rather hard to follow the plot at times, but somehow I manage.
3. I don’t bite my toenails.  Really.  I don’t.
4. Bleach is for me what a table saw is to Norm Abram from This Old House — a power tool!
5. I love to use my Weed Eater to gently trim the delicate flowers in my yard.
6.  Tahiti is my all-time favorite place to visit.  It’s the only place where my basal temperature manages to warm up to within 10 degrees of 98.6.
7. I think anyone who likes beets is a poor misguided soul.
8. Knickknacks r not me.
9. Monte Python and the Holy Grail is my favorite movie.  NOT!
10.  I dearly love my husband, our children, their spouses, and our fabulously smart, beautiful grandchildren!!!

Whew!  Aren’t you glad that’s over now?

Halloween Decorations

Got plenty of jack-o-lantern decorations hangin’ around your house?  Need a new decorating idea?  The Joys of Home blog has two very unique ones.

Grab some old books and create some Harry Potter-like books of spells or potions or magic as explained in Spooky Reading. I’ve already got plenty of dust on my bookshelves to add to the ambiance these books give.

After you’ve finished making your books, try your hand at making some Halloween Orbs. I like that you use a paint marker to write on the balls. I’m not very deft at writing with a paint brush. I think my non-crafty hands could easily whip a batch up of these little critters in no time at all.  How about you?

Halloween Activities to do with Your Grandchildren: Take Two

Victorian pumpkins. I find this idea charming.  Really.   I do.  Imagine someone from the Victorian era, like Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice, making stenciled pumpkins.  Would Mr. Darcy gently take Elizabeth’s hand and guide it as she positioned the stencil and painted the pumpkin?  Would he look longingly and deeply into her eyes?  Would Miss Bingley stumble upon this intimate scene and spat out retorts to Elizabeth?  Probably. Anyway, for a style totally different than the cross-bones-and-skull pattern that is common among grandsons, you might want to try stenciling a pumpkin.
Do you think the Bennett household would make these adorable and tasty mini ghost cupcakes? Somehow, I just can’t imagine Mrs. Bennett being so culinarily inclined. . .

Here are three more random ideas:
Halloween candy bouque. This is a delicious way to decorate (and use up some of the candy that might be floating around your house.  I think a granddaughter would love to make one of these to decorate her bedroom.

Cupcake sleeves. This site is selling the sleeves. However, I’m suggesting that after seeing them, you can create sleeves of your own with your grandchildren.

Halloween stencils. Another cupcake idea here. Again, this site is selling the stencils. All of you creative grandmas can make stencils out of card stock and then use them to sprinkle powdered sugar designs on your cupcakes.

Grandma Lizzie’s House

Walk on over to Grandma Lizzie’s House.  Take your shoes off.  Sit a spell.  Such a warm, cozy, and fun place to spend some time.

For Halloween, the monsters on a stick idea is hilarious fun.  Sure to have grandchildren appeal (and mom appeal since these are much healthier to eat than candy).  Or the Pumpkin Face Stickers.  What a great alternative to all the gloopy mess of carving.

And the recipes.  I gained 10 pounds just reading them.

Take a sneak peek at the Gratitude Table Runner so that you will be prepared for Thanksgiving.  Or the Snowman Handprint Christmas tree ornament for your Christmas tree.

Grandma Lizzie’s House has great ideas that you can do with your grandchildren.  These activities will strengthen your relationship with those grand chickabiddies.  And, that is what this site is all about!
