Trivets Out of Your Grandchildren’s Art

Artwork done by your grandchildren + Mod Podge = a wonderful activity!

Mod Podge was popular back in the ’70s.  Making little crafts with Mod Podge was within the realm of my capabilities. I sense that Mod Podge is raising its creative head to a whole new generation of users.  And what fun ideas they have.  Like Jacinda and Jaime at PrudentBaby.com

Jacinda and Jaime are sooooooooooooo crafty!  They put me to shame.  (Wait.  What am I saying?  I never, ever pretended to be a crafty person!  I’m shifty, yes.  Crafty, no. So, it wouldn’t take much craftiness to put me to shame!)

When I saw their tutorial on creating a trivet from art that their children have done, I knew instantly that I had to share this idea with my readers here.  (They graciously agreed to let me use one of their pictures to entice you, to tempt you, to tease you, to encourage you to create similar trivets of your own.)

This would be a great activity to do with your grandchildren.  Have them create their masterpiece and then create a trivet or two or thirty-eight of ‘em.

If your grandchildren do not live nearby, you could send them the supplies through the mail.  Maybe send one package with materials so your grandchildren can create their art work.  Send a second package with the trivet material.  Then, ask them to take a digital picture of what they made and e-mail it to you — or post the picture on a joint blog that you might have.

So shake a stick and get over to Prudent Baby to learn how to make a trivet!

They also had a fun idea of using Mod Podge to make a delightful tray.  She used decorative paper for the design on the bottom of the tray.  (Which made me think that another variation would be to use scrapbooking paper for your trivet.)

I also saw a picture of a child playing in a big red plastic ‘bucket’ filled with water.  I have one of those big buckets.  When I saw the picture, it made me realize how it could be used as a fun mini-personal swimming pool for my grandchildren to play in.  I just have to wait for the snowstorms to stop before I can use it like that . . . and for my grandchildren to grow up a bit . . .

Spend some time browsing the Prudent Baby site.  You’ll be delighted at what you see!

A Fun Site

Twenty-two years ago we bought two acres of land.  We bought it during the wintertime.  It was covered in snow.  Snow that glistened and sparkled like diamonds in the sun.  I thought it was beautiful.

Then spring came.  The snow melted.  What I thought were small snowdrifts were actually big rocks.  Rocks!  We’ve been battling rocks ever since.

Planting grass, flowers, trees, and shrubs was a difficult task.  We had to pick rock and haul them away.  When we dug holes, we had a six-foot long heavy pry bar to dig out the boulders.  Yard work was WORK!

That being said, I thought that I would share with you a fun site for creating springtime flowers.  (I wish it were this easy in real life!)

Click here to create your springtime flower garden.  Click your mouse on the screen to ‘plant’ flowers.  You can also hold your mouse down and drag across the screen.

Spend some time with your grandchildren making your flower garden.  It’s a delight to watch the flowers appear.  (Send the URL to your far away grandchildren so they can have fun, too.)

P.S. Don’t forget to make a comment on my PLAY-DOH giveaway!

Grandma Ideas Second Giveaway

Here it is folks!  Another give away!

Sarah, who works for a public relation agency that represents various children’s products, contacted me and asked if I would be interested in doing a give away.  Boy, would I!  I thought her offer was absolutely wonderful.

So, today’s give away is the PLAY-DOH Poppin’ Movie Snacks playset. Your grandchildren can create fun “snacks” from their very own movie theater concession stand.  They can crank out a bucket of realistic-looking popcorn or create colorful “candy” or a “hot dog” or “french fries” or “ice cream” treats.  Yum!  They can even mold out a movie ticket.

The set includes a movie theater themed playmat, four 2-ounce cans and one 5-ounce can of PLAY-DOH.  It is for children ages 3 years & up.  (The approximate retail price is $12.99 and is vailable at most major toy retailers nationwide and on HasbroToyShop.com.)

Our children loved PLAY-DOH.  (So did I.  I still do!)  I think PLAY-DOH is a ‘must have’ to help children build creativity and imagination.  And, I think this playset will provide hours of fun for you and your grandchild as you make and “eat” your movie treats and pretend to watch a movie you while you “eating” your treats.

So here’s the deal.  Post a comment here about your memories of PLAY-DOH.  Or an activity using PLAY-DOH that you have done with your children.  Or just any old comment will do (as long as it’s respectful and uses clean language).  You have until midnight Friday night, May 7, to post a comment.

I will use randomizer.org to select a winner.  I will post the winner’s name on Saturday, May 8.  I will contact the winner to get mailing information so that Sarah can send you the playset.

To increase your grandchild’s chance of winning, tell all of your daughters and daughters-in-law to post a comment.  Have your sons and sons-in-law post a comment.  Have your grandchild’s  favorite aunt post a comment.  The more comments from your family gives you grandchild more chances of winning!

I think Grandpa and I will go rent a video and eat some popcorn and some candy — the REAL kind (not the PLAY-DOH version!).
