Alcohol Ink Art

This alcohol ink craft is great for tweens and teens to do!

Do you have tween or teenaged grandchildren?

Do you have a hard time finding crafts to do with them?

Do they turn up their nose at some of your ideas?

If so, I have a terrific idea for you today! It’s called alcohol ink art.

I think that your grandkids will enjoy doing this craft. And they won’t turn their nose up at this!

It’s creative. It’s fun. And for boys, it involves fire!

Don’t worry! The fire isn’t big and it is totally manageable as you’ll see in the video below.

Here is the list of things that you’ll need:

  • alcohol ink
  • eye dropper
  • picture frame (with glass)
  • rubbing alcohol
  • disposable aluminum foil pan
  • fire lighter (not pictured)
  • white card stock (not pictured)
  • scissors (not pictured)

Let me talk a wee moment about the supplies. I couldn’t find any of the alcohol ink at Walmart or at my local Joann’s. (I thought for sure that Joann’s would have it. I could order it online and have it delivered to the nearby store but every color that I wanted wasn’t in supply. So, I got mine through Amazon.)

I was concerned about doing this craft in the house. I didn’t want to burn my house down. That wouldn’t be cool.

So I took it outside.

Here’s what you need to do. First, take the glass out of the picture frame and clean it really good. (My glass is so clean you probably can hardly see me holding it . . . )

Put the glass in the aluminum pan,

Place drops of ink on the glass. Draw a line with the ink, make a swirl, add single drops. Whatever design your little creative heart desires!

I do want to say that part of my purple ink mixed with the orange and turned brownish. I’m not fond of the color brown. So, before you squirt the ink on the glass, you might want to think about how to place the ink so that you don’t get a color combination that you don’t like.

Take the eye dropper and suck up some rubbing alcohol. Gently squirt it along the top of the glass. (I squirted a second row slightly under where I squirted the alcohol the first time because the ink didn’t flow down the glass . . . )

Gently pick up the glass and tip is down to let the ink and the rubbing alcohol run down.

Now comes the fun part! Light the lighter and carefully hold it barely above where you put the rubbing alcohol.

Let me pause for a moment to tell you what happened next.

Because it was so warm (warm like maybe 75 degrees or so), the alcohol dried up before I could light it on fire. Because I couldn’t light the fire, the end product wouldn’t be how I wanted it.

So, I packed up everything and went inside. I set it up in my kitchen.

I added more alcohol.

I lit the fire stater and held it close to the glass. The alcohol caught on fire. Yay!

The flame was small and burned out in 20 – 30 seconds. No raging fire! Phew! I was so glad. (So was my husband!)

Watch the video to see it burn.

When the fire is out, put the glass in your frame. Cut a piece of white card stock to put in the frame. This shows of your art really well.

Now you have a unique piece of art!

Enjoy doing this with your grandkids!
