Suggestions From My Book club
I belong to a book club and at one of our recent meetings one of the ladies there mentioned that she was going to have 4 new grandchildren this year. Whew! What a remarkable blessing to her family!
Two members shared something that they have done for their grandchildren that do not live close to them. Sylvia mentioned that she bought a red velvet cake and a tub of cream cheese frosting and sent it to her grandchildren for Valentine’s Day so they could have fun making it. While Valentine’s Day is over, I still believe this idea could be adapted for other holidays.
In the past, I have seen green mint mini chocolate chips. I have used them in my chocolate chip cookie recipe and they make a fun minty flavor in the cookie. So, for St. Patrick’s Day, you could send mint chocolate chips and the ingredients for making cookies to your grandchildren. Or, you could send a package with all sorts of green things — green Jell-O, green Kool-Aid, white cake mix with green food coloring. If your grandchildren don’t have the Dr. Seuss book Green Eggs and Ham, that would be fun to send them, too.
For Flag Day (June 14) or the 4th of July you could send a white cake mix, white frosting, and then red and blue sprinkles for decorations. Or you could suggest to your grandkids that instead of frosting, they could cover the cake with whipped topping, strawberries, and blue berries. They could put the blueberries in one corner and the strawberries in strips to make the cake look like a United States Flag. (For my international readers, you could adapt this idea to the colors of your national flag.) For Easter and Halloween, you could include Easter or Halloween candies to adorn the top of the cake.
Another grandmother in my book club teaches preschool. Some of her grandchildren live in a city several hours away so they cannot attend her preschool. So, she puts together a packet of all the activities she has for her preschool, and sends the packet once a month to her grandchildren. The grandchildren work with their mother to do the activities in the packet.
Now, some of you might not be preschool teachers so you don’t have similar things to include in a packet. However, you could still create similar packets to send to your grandchildren. Just go to the dollar store and get work books and coloring books and crayons and pencils and erasers and rulers and scissors and send these in a mail to your grandchildren. If you were clever, you could design your own worksheets instead of buying them at the store. Then, your grandchildren will receive in the mail a very personalized and fun packet from their grandmother.
Enjoy!
