Spooky, Edible Halloween Food for Grandchildren

(Note: These photos are from Family Fun.)

Want treats for a Halloween party with your grandchildren that are way easy to fix — and way spooky?

Try this ‘finger food’ idea from Family Fun.

To make these edible fingers, all you have to do is make a few cuts in some string cheese to make the knuckles, make a shallow cut-out for the fingernail bed, and add a wee bit o’ green pepper for the fingernails.

Can’t get much easier than that.

If you have a little bit older grandchildren, you can make your fingers a little bit more gruesome.

Make some severed fingers using ketchup or hot sauce for blood.  Ketchup on string cheese doesn’t sound appealing to me.  Hot sauce is . . . well . . . too . . . hot for my taste buds.  I’d maybe use a mild salsa instead.

Brain cupcakes are another easy treat to make. If you purchase tubes of pre-made frosting, this is especially easy to make.  (I’m not sure the pre-made kind comes in a ‘brain’ color though . . .)

Grandchildren would delight in making both of these treats.  (That could be part of the activities if you have a Halloween party for your grandchildren.)

Remember a few days ago I wrote “Make a Mummy with Your Grand-Mummy?“  Here’s another mummy idea.

This little pizza mummy is so easy to make.  It’s just pizza sauce on an English muffin with eyes made out of olives and green onions and then strips of string cheese placed on it to make it looked like a mummy.

Don’t you agree that the folks at Family Fun dish up some great Halloween food ideas?

(How would it be to be that creative, huh?)

Don’t forget to participate in my giveaway to receive a CD of music written by Chip Taylor and his granddaughters.  Just leave a comment before midnight this Thursday October 20.

Halloween Activities

I love strolling out and about on the Internet. Especially when a holiday is coming up.

I see so many talented people.  And, I want to make sure that YOU see the fun things that I see, too.

So, here’s a few links to some of my Halloween finds.

  • Halloween origami box.  This is an activity for older grandchildren.  Ones that has fine motor skills.  And patience.  Not necessarily in that order.
  • Halloween balloon body parts.  Gotta love those eyes!  Will especially appeal to grandsons.
  • Paper witch shoes. A delightful party favor that will appeal to shoe aficionados.
  • Paper ghost garland. Easy to make.  I bet for all of you clever folks out there you can create other Halloween garlands (out of witches,  bats, Frankenstein, pumpkins. . .).
  • Friendly ghost bag.  These are party favors but you could use them as decorations, too.
  • Easy glowing ghosts. These are so easy and great for a dark Halloween night.  Make a whole gaggle of them.

And when you’ve completed all of your crafty activities, make some Black Cat Cookies.  (You might even want to make a candy corn clay pot.)

Make a Mummy with Your Grand-Mummy

What do you think of the title of this post? Clever, eh?

Cheesy, you say?  Downright ridiculous?  Well!

I almost got hurt from patting myself on the back after I thought of it.

I have come across some clever, clever mummy craft activities.  Ones that are simple. Ones that are very easy for grandchildren to make.  And, they are also inexpensive.

If you’ll apologize for saying my title was cheesy, I’ll share those ideas with you.

Are we friends?  Good.

Here we go.  Make an easy-peasy mummy out of a paper plate. You could cut different sized circles out of lightweight cardboard (I’m thinking cereal boxes, folks) so that you can have different sizes of mummies.  Daddy mummies.  Mummy mummies. Baby mummies. (Mummy mummies . . . I just can’t keep my creativity in check, you know. . . )

You can also make mini mummies out of Popsicle sticks or craft sticks. (Lest you roll your eyes at the ‘mini mummies’ phrase, let me tell you that that is the phrase from this website.  It’s not of my creativity.)

What about making a mummy out of a clay pot? Fun idea, I’d say.  The directions call for using an old t-shirt.  If you’ve got old t-shirts on hand, this is a good recycling project.  But I think that cheesecloth would make a classier mummy.  (Do mummies have class?)

These mummy heads are delightful.  Wouldn’t it be fun to have a flock of them sitting on your bookshelf?

Here are directions for a mummy candy holder made out of a plastic water bottle.  You can make a yummy mummy treat cup out of a plastic cup, too.  (Disclaimer: while my medula oblongata is a clever word user, alas I did not come up with the yummy mummy phrase.  Wish I had, though.)

Don’t you think that these would be fun activities to do at a Halloween party hosted at grand-mummy’s house?

(I think that I need to go to my thesaurus to find synonyms for the word fun . . . )

Make Halloween Goodies with Grandkids

Monster brownies. Aren’t they a hoot? I think every grandchild would love to make — and eat — these lil’ darlings.

Go to Amanda’s Cooking to learn how to make these monsters. She’s one clever gal to come up with this creative idea!

This idea was part of a Halloween recipe round-up on Betty Crocker’s web page. You owe it to yourself — and your grandchildren — to look at the creative ideas dear ol’ Betty has on her site.  There’s:

My sweet little 2 year old granddaughter is coming to visit tomorrow.  I am planning on having a baking activity with her since she loves to ‘help’ cook.  Mmmmm . . . do you think her cooking skills are up to making the truffle eyeballs???
