I have an undergraduate degree in English. Reading is important to me — especially as a mother and grandmother.
Imagine my dismay when our oldest son lost interest in reading once he reached middle school. There wasn’t anything wrong with his reading ability. It was just that his interest was zip. Nada.
Oh how I wish there were Reading Incentive Kits back then. I would have jumped at the chance to use them to improve my son’s interest in reading.
Just exactly what are Reading Incentive Kits? They are boxes from the company Reading with RIK that come filled with a well-known children’s book, a series of numbered surprise packages, and a “think piece” related to the story to help kids with their reading comprehension.
There is also a special sealed envelope to parents that explains the surprise items in the box. This is wise so that parents aren’t taken by surprise by what is in the packages. (Since some items are food, parents can take necessary precautions if their child has allergies.)
Our incentive kit is based around Camping Catastrophe by Abby Klein which is part of the Ready, Freddy! Series. (The books are high-quality books that have the stamp of approval of teachers, librarians, and especially of kids!)
Let’s see what’s in the box!
I like that the surprise boxes and envelopes are brightly colored. This is very appealing to kids — and to moms and grandmothers!
Okay. Now that we’ve checked out everything, let’s read! Of course, little brother is intrigued, too, even though he can’t read. He can definitely listen to the story being read out-loud and watch as big brother opens the surprises.
He enjoyed the story and enjoyed opening the surprises. He thought the reading kit was lots of fun.
One of the nice things about this book is that there were some activities at the end — like jokes and word searches. Here are two of my favorite jokes.
Q: Why don’t grizzlies wear shoes?
A: Because they like to walk around in their bear feet.
Q: What did the golden retriever take when he went camping?
A: A pup tent!
Aren’t those funny? Kids will love those jokes!
Reading Incentive Kits are amazing. Awesome. Incredible. Marvelous. Terrific. Fantastic. As you can probably tell, I am impressed with these Reading Incentive Kits.
These kits motivate kids to read. They help children increase their comprehension. And, they add an element of suspense and surprise which makes reading extra fun for kids. There is magic in them that speak to the reluctant reader’s soul. That reluctance disappears and is replaced by an eagerness to read. That’s priceless — something that all parents hope for their kids!
So, take a moment and head on over to Reading with RIK. Check out their kits. If you join their mailing list, you get 10% off your order. If you sign-up for their RIK-A-Month subscription, you will get 25% off their regular kit price.
You know, Christmas is right around the corner. This would make a wonderful present for a grandchild — especially one who is a struggling reader!
Scurry on over there right now to take a look!
