You can make some Valentine magnets in under 15 minutes. Why, I predict that it will take you more time to round up the supplies than to make the magnets.

Heart Magnet Supplies
Valentine fabric
scissors
quilt batting
thread
needle
sticky-backed magnet strip
and of course my free printable heart pattern

Print and then cut out the paper heart pattern. (There are a bunch of hearts in the pattern . . . ) Then, use the pattern to cut out two hearts from your fabric.

This heart pattern is fairly small. I found that fabric that has a large-ish design on it doesn’t seem to work very well because you won’t be able to see the whole design very well. So, I recommend small Valentine print fabric for the magnet.

Next, thread your needle and, using a basting stitch, sew around the edge of the heart.

I used crochet thread. You don’t have to if you don’t want to. You can use normal sewing thread — but make sure you double the thread because that will be stronger. (This is a fun project for beginning sewers to learn how to baste.)

Leave about 1 inch open so that you can stuff your heart.

Take a small amount of quilt batting and push it into the heart. You might want to use something like a pen or pencil to push the batting into the top curved part of the heart.

Finish stitching around your heart and tie a knot in the thread. Cut a small strip of sticky-backed magnet. Remove the paper backing and firmly push the magnet strip onto the back of your heart.

Ta da! Your heart magnet is done!

I’ve used two magnets to hold my grandson’s picture on the fridge. (I sure love that little guy! Isn’t he a cutie?)

Your teen and tween granddaughters can use these magnets in their school lockers. Or put on their fridge at home. Or on a metal picture frame — if they have one in their bedroom. Or, they could make a flock to give out to their friends.
