I am an awful slacker! I should have gotten around to writing about the great holidays in August a long time ago.
Like, at least the last week of July.
Oh well. Life goes on.
So, here’s a list of several fun holidays that you can celebrate with your grandchildren.
Today – today – today – August 9th, is Book Lovers Day. I’m mad that I’m so late on writing about this. Rats. Double rats! There would be so many fun things you could do with grandchildren to celebrate this. Alas, since I’m so late, I’ll save my ideas for next year. (Do you think that I’ll remember it then?)
We are leaving tomorrow for a family reunion with our kids and grandkids. I am going to take a book for each night. Just before our grandkids go to bed, I’ll gather them in our tent trailer and read them a bedtime story and snuggle and hug and kiss them. At their age (4 years old and younger), they probably don’t care at all that I’ve missed celebrating this holiday with them.
August 10th is National S’mores Day. If, by any chance, you will not be around a campfire to make s’mores, here are two s’more recipes that you could bake with your grandchildren: S’more Brownies and S’more Bars. They are easy to make and yummy to eat. If you don’t have grandchildren that live nearby that could come over and make them with you, send your far away grandchildren the links to these recipes and encourage them to make one of the recipes. August 17th is National Thriftshop Day. Oh my, you can certainly have loads of fun on this day! Take your grandchildren to a thrift store. Give them a certain amount of money to spend. Let them spend the money on whatever they choose. Or, encourage them to spend the money on books. Or, challenge them to purchase items for a ‘wild and wacky’ dress-up costume. Then, go back to your home, have them dress up in their wild and wacky costume and play games and have a ‘wild and wacky’ party. Or, challenge them to purchase only red things.
August 30th – Frankenstein Day. This day was created to honor Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, who is the author of the book Frankenstein. To celebrate this day and also Book Lovers Day, you could read this book with your grandchildren — assuming that they are old enough to appreciate and understand the book and not be too scared by it. (I don’t think that my little one-month-old or four-month-old grandsons would especially care if I read it with them or not . . .)
You could also watch an old Frankenstein movie with your grandkids. Or watch this YouTube video. When you go on your jaunt to the thrift shop, have your grandchildren spend their money on a ‘monster’ costume. Then, on the 30th, have a Frankenstein party where everybody wears their thrift store costume. Then, dance to the Monster Mash music!

Thriftshop Day? That is right up my alley. My grands already beg me to take them to the dollar store. Soon they’ll be asking to go to the thriftshop as well. One more way to have fun without spending a lot!
