I can’t wait for summertime to get here.
Lately, I’ve been thinking about summer activities that Grandpa and I can do with the grandkids. Like roast hot dogs over our fire pit. Make S’mores. Make homemade ice cream. (Mmm . . . why do all of my ideas seem to focus on food?)
I’m also thinking that these activities might last through dusk and possibly into the evening. And if it does, I have a terrific way to shed some light on the activities. Make luminaries!
These luminaries are exceptionally easy to make. If you have already pre-washed your jars, it will only take about 10 minutes to make them.
Grandsons and granddaughters can easily make them. (Grandsons might prefer a more masculine tissue paper than what I used here.) Making your luminaries can be part of your evening’s activities.
First, round up some empty, clean jars, some tissue paper, scissors, ribbons, and battery powered tea lights. (Battery powered tea lights are lots safer when grandchildren are making the luminaries.)
Measure the width and height of the jar. Cut out a piece of tissue paper with those measurements.
Roll up the piece of tissue paper into a tube shape so that you can slide it into the jar.
Use a pencil (that has an eraser on the end) to help push the paper against the inside of the jar.
Tie a bow around the top of the jar. Turn on the tea light and drop it into the jar — and you are done! See. I told you this was exceptionally easy!
You can line your front steps and sidewalk with the luminaries. Or put them on the table where you are serving your hot dogs/S’mores/homemade ice cream.
Stay tuned because I’m going to share more ‘light’ activities over the next week or two.

This would be a fun Summer project for kids! Shared to http://www.facebook.com/CherryPrairie
Hi Nina, I love fun and easy ideas like this to do with my grands. Perfect activity for achievement days as well. I no longer have that calling but My sis does. I’ll be sharing it with her. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
hugs,
Jann
Hi Jann,
You are so sweet to share this idea with your sister to do with her achievement day girls! I like easy, too! I think that’s my middle name.
Thanks for dropping by and commenting — and commenting on the books for boys and the book about writing your memoir! Our grandson came down from Logan for the weekend and all he wanted to do was pretend to be the main character in the Magic Treehouse books! It was so fun pretending along with him.
All the best,
Nina
Beautiful, lovely idea, thanks for sharing with Hearth and soul blog hop, pinning, tweeting.

Hi Jennifer,
Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting! I really appreciate it. And ‘easy’ is the best way to do crafts!
Nina
These are such a great idea! I love how easy they were to make and I really appreciate your easy to follow directions too. Thanks so much for linking these up to our Something to Talk About Link Party. They’re fantastic. CoCo
Coco,
I do ‘easy’ really well — especially when it comes to crafts. After reading your About page, I am nowhere CLOSE to the skilled craftsman you are! (By the way, I loved reading that page!!)
Thanks for dropping by and commenting,
Nina
Lindsy,
Thanks for dropping by. As for easy, that’s the best kind of craft in my book!!
Have a great day,
Nina
Isobel,
Since the jars are pint Mason jars, the paper doesn’t touch the light at all. And, the light is such a low wattage that I don’t believe it is strong enough to start a fire. I haven’t had any problems with it.
All the best

Super cute idea! This would be so easy to make! Thank you! I found you on Thrify Thursday link!
Tahnee, thanks for dropping by! I appreciate it. Not only is this easy, you can easily change the paper to match the season or holiday.
All the best!
Nina
Lovely – but how come the paper doesn’t catch when the lights go in? That’s what I’d be a bit leery about.
These are so pretty! And I love that they are simple.
4th of July. What a fun idea! Especially if you had red, white, and blue tissue paper in the jars. I’m going to do that this year!
How cute and what fun! Those would be really cute on the porch for the 4th of July!!
These are great because even the youngest grandkids can participate and get a nice project. (Well, maybe not my month old granddaughter – but just wait!) And what did we ever do without those battery tea lights? They open up so many possibilities for kids that we had to pass up before. I still love your castle from a few posts back!
