Play the Thrift Store Game

August 17 is National Thrift Shop Day. Wahoo!

What a wonderful ‘holiday’ to celebrate with your grandkids!

I have a great Thrift Store Game that I want to share with you.

But first, I want to show you some of the great finds that I gotten at our local store.

In the past year, my friend and I have gone several times to the thrift store.

On one trip, I found this dress. It was the perfect size for our granddaughter.

I added bling on the flowers on the bodice and the skirt.

It’s kinda hard to see it in the picture but it’s really there.

I added pearls along the neckline and a silk flower at the waist. Our granddaughter absolutely loves to dress up it it!

I also happened upon these lovelies. Aren’t they stupendous? You just gotta love those pointy toes and the sequins.

So far, they are too big for my granddaughters. However, one granddaughter has attempted to wear the blue shoes because those shoes are a tad smaller.

I love going to find things for my dress up closet! That’s a cheap form of entertainment for me!

Okay. Now for the Thrift Store Game.

Gather your grandchildren together. Take them to your thrift store. Pair two together. Each set needs either a digital camera or a cell phone with a camera. (This activity works best for tween and/or teen-aged grandchildren.)

Print off copies of the Thrift Store Game list. There is a set for the granddaughters and one for the grandsons.

Explain that they cannot run around and act wild. They have to have good manners and good behavior. Otherwise, they are eliminated from the game.

They have 1 hour to find as many things on their list as possible. If the item is a piece of clothing, they have to take a picture of one of them wearing the item. If it is something like a toy or book, they have to take a picture of one of them holding the item.

At the end of the time, see who has taken pictures of the most items on their list. Those grandkids are the winners. (You can adjust the amount of time spent on the activity depending on the age of your grandchildren.)

Then, give each child 2-3 dollars to buy something that they would like to have. Or, they can help you find something for your dress up clothes. Or something to use for a Halloween costume. Or a sweater for an ugly sweater party (that you could have another day). This way, you are supporting the thrift store and not just using it as a playground.
