The Best Gift to Give a Grandma

I’ll let you in on a little secret. I’ve always wanted to be a grandma. ALWAYS!

I’m not sure why.

Could it be because I loved my grandmothers? Possibly. Was it because I knew they loved me? Probably. Could it be because I loved going to their homes? Maybe.

Whatever the reason, I was excited to become a grandmother. Totally.

I wasn’t like women who wailed and gnashed their teeth that they were too young to be a grandmother. I wasn’t like women who felt that being called grandma made them feel old and therefore insisted that their grandchildren called them a cutesy name. (A grandma by any other name is still a grandmother!)

Now that I got that off my chest, I’ll get off my soapbox and get on with telling you about the best gift that a grandmother could ever receive — regardless of her aversion to being called grandma.

Lisa Carpenter’s book A Love Journal: 100 Things I Love About Grandma is hot off the press, folks! Just in time for Christmas.

Lemme tell you several reasons why I absolutely love this book.

First, I really like the title — especially the first part. This book is a love journal. It’s all about love, love, love. It’s a super easy way for a grandchild to share her love for her grandmother.

The writing prompts are great. They aren’t boring. No siree, Bob. They’re fun. They’re clever. They’re thought provoking.

And especially this one! (Like I said. Not your average-run-of-the-mill-boring-as-snot journal prompt.)

Another thing that I like is that there are blank pages sprinkled throughout the book where a grandchild can write whatever she wants — something that is especially unique to the 2 of them.

I also like the illustrations in the book. They aren’t garish and won’t visually ‘conk’ grandma over the head. Even though they are ‘modern’ (as opposed to vintage), they are soft, sweet, and subtle and would appeal to a grandmother.

But the best thing that I like about the book, isn’t in the book.

Yet.

I love this book for the potential it has. I love that it gives grandchildren a chance to look inside their hearts. It gives them time to reflect about their relationship with their grandmother. It gives them a place to record that love.

Any grandmother who receives this book from a grandchild will cherish it forever. It will be a treasure far more valuable than gold. I guarantee it.

If you’re a grandma, tell the parents of your grandkids about this book. Don’t try and drop subtle hints that you want it for Christmas. Just come right out and tell them to get it.

If you are a parent, GET THIS BOOK so your child can fill it out and give to grandma.

If you’re a store cashier, tell the people who come through your checkout stand about this book. They will thank you for it — and so will a grandmother somewhere in the world.
