Fun Watercolor Activity

supplies needed

Plastic wrap. It isn’t something that normally comes to mind when you think of watercolors.

But, believe it or not, that’s exactly what you need for this fun art activity.

So here’s a list of things you’ll need:

  • Watercolor paints
  • Paintbrush
  • Watercolor paper
  • Plastic wrap

Some people assume that they aren’t artistic. They assume that since they aren’t artistic, that any attempt at painting with watercolors would be a failure. A dismal one at best.

Ha! That idea is wrong. So wrong.

Besides, today’s activity is more about having fun with watercolors and NOT about creating a masterpiece. The purpose is for your grandkids to have fun. To be creative. To try something new.

Got that? Good.

So let’s get going.

First spread watercolor paint on your paper. Paint stripes, circles, blobs, whatever.

Use several different colors. Use only one color. Have them do whatever strikes their fancy.

Make sure they use plenty of water while painting.

When they are satisfied with what they’ve painted, have them tear off a piece of plastic wrap. (Isaac gets his plastic wrap ready.)

Place it on top of the picture. Don’t worry about how crinkled up it is. Crinkles are good. In fact, after they’ve put the plastic down, have them use their fingers to squinch it up to make even more wrinkles and creases.

When they are satisfied, have them set their picture aside.

Now comes the hardest part of all. Waiting.

Yup. Waiting.

Wait until the watercolor paint is dry.

While you are waiting, your grandkids could paint another picture and put cling wrap on it. In fact, they could paint a whole flock of pictures using different colors and painting different designs.

When the paint is dry, carefully remove the plastic wrap.

You’ll see that the wrinkles and creases in the plastic wrap created interesting geometric shapes in the paint!

Do their masterpieces rival those of Monet or Renoir?

Nope.

And that’s okay.

Remember what I said at the beginning? It’s more about the experience, about having fun and being creative.

I hope you and your grandkids have fun with this easy and inexpensive art activity!
