(Psst. Before I begin, you need to remember that I work at a university. When I refer to ‘the bookstore,’ that means the university bookstore. Got that? Good.)
The other day I was at the bookstore. I was on an errand to mail the cookbook to the winner of my giveaway. (This bookstore provides mailing services in addition to selling college textbooks, notebooks, pens, and chocolate covered cinnamon bears. All the necessities of life for college students and university employees alike.)
I happened upon a display of children’s books. (Isn’t it interesting that a university bookstore also sells children’s books?) I saw the most delightful book! I knew I had to tell you, Dear Readers, all about it. The book is Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs by Mo Williams.
This picture book is hilarious! The humor is so good that it will keep grandmothers happy while they read it to their grandchildren. (It’s not like the book Are You My Mother that makes you want to scratch your eyes out after you read it for the 100th time to a grandchild. . . )
Here are a few pictures from the book. First, the outside cover.
Now for the inside of the picture book.
Check out the papa dinosaur’s eyebrows and mustache. Hillariouis!
This is a little bit further into the story where mama dino can’t wait for a succulent child to come along.
And this is the “other” dinosaur’s response to the situation. (These references to Norway crack me up!)
After I read the book in the bookstore, I stood there lovingly stroking the cover. Pondering. Should I buy copies to give to my grandchildren for Christmas? Or, should I buy it for myself and then read it to the grandkiddos when they come over? What do you, Dear Reader, think I should do?
Mo Willems,, the author, has written a plethora of books for children. The “pigeon’ series (Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, Don’t Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late.\), the Knuffle Bunny books (Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale, Knuffle Bunny Too: A Case of Mistaken Identity) and a whole flock of other books.
Every single book of his that I have read has been delightful. So, grandmas, in my humble opinion, you won’t go wrong if you get one of his books — whether the book is for you or for your grandchildren.
(Oh. By the way, I wasn’t given any money, books, chocolate covered cinnamon bears, or Rolos to write about this picture book. Rats.)
You can get a copy of the book for $10.

I love writers with a sense of humor! My scratch-my-eyes-out books are the ones written to capitalize on the popularity of a movie or TV show. They are almost always ploddingly dull. But not always. My kids and I loved Sesame Street’s The Monster at the End of This Book. Remember that one?
I do hope you consider me a writer with a sense of humor! I would feel honored. I totally agree with you about books based on movies or TV shows. I do remember The Monster at the End of This Book. It’s one of my favorites!!
This one sounds darling. And yes, I have nearly “scratched my eyes out” reading certain books over and over and over again!
I suppose, when in doubt, a grandma could buy one copy and read it to all the kiddoes. If just one child is particularly taken with it, it could go home with him/her that day – or “disappear” from inventory and be wrapped and tagged in advance for Christmas.
Great suggestion! Thanks for sharing it.
Thank you for the recommendation! I’m definitely going to check out this author. I’m glad I’m not the only grandma who labors over whether to buy for all or to have at my home.
My grandchildren love the books by that author!
