NOTE: I was given a free copy of this kit to review but all opinions are my own.
We live in a beautiful and amazing world! I love looking out my window at the mountains just a mile away from my home.
Even though I moan about the deer that eat the shrubs and flowers in my yard, I enjoy seeing the critters that wander through our yard. (Just last night, our son saw two raccoons scampering down our driveway when he came for a visit.)
And, I want our grandchildren to learn to love and appreciate the beauties around them.
The PBS Kids Look and Learn Nature Detective Kit is a superb way to help them do exactly that!
The kit comes with everything young detectives need to turn an average walk outside into an adventure.
There’s a yellow magnifying lens with two levels of magnification for getting up close and personal with nature . . .
. . . a laminated scavenger hunt list . . .
. . . an activity poster, and a sturdy 64-page book.
The colorful pages appeal to kids (and adults!). And the pictures are amazing! Very high quality.
Our granddaughters thought the weevil on this page was eeeww gross! (But I suspect boys would love it!)
After looking at the scavenger hunt list, the poster, and the book, my granddaughters headed outside to see what they could see with the magnifying lens.
Grass. And is that a bug?
Look at the lines in the bark of the tree!
What an interesting leaf!
And lookee here at this leaf!
Even little Isaac wanted to get in on all of the fun.
Here are three supplemental activities that you can print up and use:
- Activity 1 – leaf matching
- Activity 2 – animals and their homes
- Activity 3 – ‘what do you see’ activity page
This is an excellent kit! I like it for many reasons. First, I’m impressed with the quality of the items you get. They will last through lots of use.
I’m impressed with the quality of the pictures and of the information in the book. And, it’s written simple so that kids can easily understand. Kids aren’t hit over the head with an overload-of-information hammer that would turn them off.
This kit encourages kids to get up off the couch and go outside and explore! I support wholesome activities like this one that gets kids away from sitting comatose in front of a video game for hours at a time.
It helps kids build their observation skills. They’ll improve their skills of sorting by shape, size, and color. They’ll recognize patterns in nature and how to identify common features and ones that are different. And much more.
I give this nature kit two thumbs up. And so do my grandkids!
Since Christmas is just around the corner, this would make a wonderful present to give a young grandchild. It would also make a great birthday present. And, I think that parents would be really pleased if their child got this as a gift because it isn’t a toy that would quickly get broken or lost at the bottom of the toy box.
You can find the PBS Kids Look and Learn Nature Detective Kit on Amazon for $16.00. It is for pre-school children up to those in the second grade.
