Are you looking for a Halloween craft that is super easy?
One that doesn’t take lots of time to prepare for?
One that is cheap, cheap, cheap?
One that the grandkiddos will absolutely love?
Then, I suggest you make these apothecary jars!
They aren’t your typical Halloween craft — which means that your grandkids will not be bored with the craft.
And. And! If they happen to be Harry Potter fans, all the better! (If they aren’t fans, they’ll still love making these jars!)
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Empty containers such as spice cans, medicine bottles, Tylenol containers (that kind of thing!)
- Black spray paint
- Free label paintables
- School glue
First off, paint your container.
Let the paint dry.
While you are waiting, print up your labels. Right click on the pictures to download.
After downloading the labels that you want to use, copy them into your word processing program.
Measure your container and size the label so it will fit your container.
Print them and cut them out.
Then crumple them. Really. Good. This makes the label look aged.
Then, smear some school blue on the back of the label and put it on your container!
And that’s all it takes, folks!
Here’s our witchy granddaughter ready to use her potions to make someone invisible! (She’s like her mother who always wanted to dress up as a witch for Halloween!)
Now. Lemme share with you what I learned.
After I took that picture of my cute granddaughter, she and her sister started playing ‘witch.’ They carried around their apothecary jars and the spell books that they made. (I’ll be sharing how to make those spell books in a few days.)
Some of the paint peeled off the containers!
So, when I made the apothecary jars with other grandkids, I spray painted the containers instead of having the grandkids paint them with acrylic craft paint.
That worked MUCH better!
And Simon said that this was the best craft ever!
Of course I couldn’t let the kids have all of the fun. I had to make some apothecary jars for Halloween decorations for my home. (I’m not into playing Harry Potter . . .)
Here are pictures of some of the containers I made. On this bottle, I wrapped jute string around the top of the bottle and hot glued on some Spanish moss. (I did that because I didn’t have a lid for the bottle.)
I had a lid for this bottle but I wanted to put Spanish moss on it.
I think that they turned out pretty good, if you do ask me. But then I’m not biased . . . am I??
Here are some places where you can get more free labels:
- The Navage Patch
- Itsy Bitsy Fun
- The Graphics Fairy (I love these!)
Of course, you could go to Google images and search for free Halloween apothecary labels to find more. There are LOTS!
Stay tuned to see how to make the spell books!

Nina, those are amazing! Will definitely have to try making those for next year. LOVE them! Thanks so much for sharing with us at the Whimsical Wednesdays Link Party! Have a great week!
I hope you have fun making these next year! Remember! Use spray paint and not acrylic paints!
These jars turned out so cute! I’ve seen them in boutiques, how nice that you can make your own for pretty cheap!

What a neat idea. My niece and nephews love Harry Potter, so they’d love these.
