Okay folks. If you’re a regular reader, you’ll know that one word describes my favorite types of crafts. That word is EASY!
And today, I have a super easy Halloween picture craft for you and your grandkids!
In about 20 minutes (give or take depending on the age of the kiddos . . .), your grandkids can make a fun picture that they can use as a Halloween decoration in their room.
Here’s a list of items that you’ll need:
- 5″ x 7″ black picture from from a dollar store
- Halloween scrapbook paper
- Orange colored card stock paper
- Glue stick
- Scissors
- My Halloween printables — printable 1, printable 2, or printable 3
First, cut a 5″ x 7″ rectangle from your Halloween colored paper. (My granddaughters love the color purple and hot pink. So those were the colors they chose. I was thinking they’d pick orange. Oh well . . . )
Next, cut out a piece of your Halloween scrap book paper that is about 5 inches tall and 5 inches wide. It doesn’t have to be exact.
Then, tear off some paper from each side so that you end up with a piece of paper that is about 3 inches wide and has jagged torn sides.
Leaving about an inch-and-a-half on the left side of your plain colored paper, glue on your torn scrapbook paper.
Where is the picture for this step?
I dunno!
My daughter was the photographer and I wasn’t paying attention as she snapped pictures. I assumed that she was getting one of each step. Guess I shouldn’t assume things, huh?
But you can see what I mean in the photos of the finished Halloween pictures.
Next, have your grandkids select which graphic they want to use from my free printables.
These are the graphics in my printable 1.

Have them do a rough cut around their graphic. (A ‘rough’ cut is where you don’t cut exactly around the edge of the graphic. Instead, you cut about one-fourth of an inch away so that there is some white around the graphic.)
Natalie decided she wanted to cut the graphic out exactly following the edge of the design. That’s okay, too!
Get some scrap pieces of white paper. Cut two strips that are about half-an-inch wide and about 5 inches long. (Just eye-ball the dimensions. It really won’t matter. Just make sure that the width isn’t much wider than half-an-inch.)
You’ll assemble an accordion style ‘pop up’ strip of paper. Click here to read directions on how to glue and fold the paper. It’s really easy to do!
Here’s a video that demonstrates the folding process.
Make sure that your strip of ‘pop up’ isn’t very long. If it’s too long, your picture will sag instead of popping out.
Glue one end of your pop up paper to the back of your graphic. Hold for a minute or two to let the glue dry.
Determine where along the scrap book paper that you want to glue your graphic. Then, add glue to the other end of your pop up strip of paper and then press that end down on top of the scrap book paper. Hold for a minute to let the glue dry.
(You may need two pop-ups if your graphic is very tall or wide. Determine just how many pop ups you’ll need and where you’ll glue them on before you start glueing!)
This is a view of Emma’s picture from the top. Can you see how the pop up strips of paper are glued on and hold her graphic out away from the hot pink card stock?
Take off the back of your picture frame. Remove the paper “picture” and the glass.
Place your Halloween picture inside the frame and replace the back.
Voilá! Your Halloween picture craft is finished!
My granddaughters had so much fun making this craft! They absolutely loved their Halloween picture.
I hope you and your grandkids have as much fun making this craft as we did!

REALLY CUTE! I’m glad you’re spreading the word to grandmas that Dollar Tree has great frames for projects like this and other kinds of kids’ art. When projects are framed they look very professional!
Happy Halloween to you, Nina, and your beautiful grandkiddies!
