The Grandad Handbook

The Grandad Handbook by Tony Simms has jokes, riddles, crafts, recipes, and activities that grandads can do with grandkids.

(NOTE: I was given a copy of this book to review but all opinions are my own.)

Grandads get shortchanged on the Internet. If you Google ”activities grandpa can do with grandchildren,” how many results do you think that you will get? Huh?

After searching through 4 pages of results (there were way more), I found only one. One! One measly result.

The rest were for grandparents. Poor grandpa doesn’t get to be by himself. He gets lumped together with grandma. Poor guy.

So I’m going to help change that. I’m reviewing The Grandad Handbook by Tony Simms and my post will double that count.

So let’s dive in and take a look at the book!

One of the first pages is a place where grandfathers can enter their grandchildren’s names and birthdays. That’s awesome. What a handy place to keep this information — and handy to keep that info within easy reach. This makes it easy for grandfathers to remember birthdays.

What else does it have? you ask. Well, here are a few other things that I enjoyed.

  • The nose grab. How to trick a child into thinking you’ve snatched her nose right off of her face.
  • The sweet tree. Harvesting fruit (candy) from a tree.
  • Seek and destroy. A night game where kids try to pop balloons before getting ‘caught’ in grandpa’s flashlight beam.
  • Wet walk. Sauntering in a meandering stream.
  • Wink murder. Circle the wagons (or grandkids) for this activity! A grandkid ‘murders’ the others by winking at them.
  • Tongue twisters. What can I say? Certainly not these without TONS of practice.

Throw in jokes, droodles, a few crafts and recipes (my favorite is chicken pox pancakes) and you’ve got a fun little — and useful — book for grandfathers.

Simms and his wife live in Portugal. They have four children and nine grandchildren. He believes that grandfathers should enable grandchildren to do all of the things that grandmothers might disapprove of.

Christmas is just around the corner. This little book would be a great stocking stuffer for a grandad. (It would also make a good birthday gift, a Father’s Day gift, or a gift for no reason at all!)

You can get a copy of The Grandad Handbook by Tony Simms on Amazon by $9.97.
