School is out. Hip hip hooray!
That means kids have more free time. Something that stresses out mothers.
So let’s kill two birds with one stone.
I have a summer reading challenge for kids. Share it with your grandkids. It will give them something to do. Moms will be happy. Kids will be happy. They won’t be singing the I’m-bored-got-nothin-to-do blues.
And, you’ll be a sneaky grandma. Sneaky in that you are providing a fun way to keep kids reading through the summer. Parents and teachers will love you for that!
A lot of times adults tell kids to read for 30 minutes a day. That could be challenging for kids if they are struggling readers.
Instead, why not give them a different challenge. Instead of reading 30 minutes a day, have your grandchild read in an empty bathtub. Or while sipping cold chocolate milk.
Wouldn’t that sound more appealing to kids?
So. Here’s my new summer reading challenge that you can give to your grandkids. It has all new ideas. (More on my old challenge in a moment.)
Four years ago, I created a similar challenge. (It’s about time I had a new one, huh?) There are different ideas on that one.
You can print both of them up and give to your grandkids. If they live far away, mail it to them. As in snail mail. Grandkids love getting mail.
A while back, I shared 12 tips on how to encourage reading. I also shared a list of 34 books that were favorites with kids. I’m sure that your grandkids could find one or two books on that list that they’d enjoy reading if they need any ideas for a book to read.
I also wrote about a father who had a son that struggled with reading. They spent time together on a web site that helped his son really improve his reading skills.
If you have a grandchild who struggles with reading, spend some time with your grandchild on that site. You’ll have some great bonding time together while reading improves.
Here are some books that appeal to boys. (Girls like them, too, but if you’ve got a grandson, they’ll be a hit with him.)
Here’s a list of books that will appeal to granddaughters. Here’s a young adult book that I absolutely loved. Your YA granddaughter would love it, too.
Do you have a teenaged grandchild? This would be a good book for him or her to read.
You could even make some easy bookmarks with your grandchild.
Reading is so important. It opens doors to so many opportunities which would otherwise be shut.
Be an awesome grandma. Do all that you can to encourage your grandkids to read!

This is fantastic! I’m a reading tutor, and my students would love this! Thanks so much for sharing at Thursday Favorite Things!
I’m so glad that you like it!!! I hope your students will enjoy it.
I love reading challenges. my daughter is a little bookworm and she will be doing a few challenges through the summer
Huzzah that your daughter is a bookworm! It warms my heart to know that she loves to read. Happy reading — to both of you.
This is an inventive way to get kids to breed in different places other than their bedroom on the couch.
