Now that summer is here, I needed to do summertime crafts with the grandkids, right? Right. These tea cup bird feeder is a perfect craft to do. They’re easy. They’re inexpensive. And they are dang cute!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Tea cup and matching saucer
- E6000 glue
- Copper pipe 3 feet long
- Copper cap
(Sorry I didn’t take a picture of the needed supplies. We were so excited to start doing the craft that I totally spaced it out.)
Of course we didn’t use tea cups from my set of china for this craft! I bought them at a thrift store.
So here’s how you make this awesome bird feeder.
First, sand a spot in the middle of the bottom of the saucer. This helps the glue to adhere really good. (It’s easier to sand the saucer now before the tea cup is glued to it.)
Turn the saucer right side up.
Squirt some glue around the indentation where the cup sits. (If your saucer doesn’t have this little rim, I’d squirt the glue on the bottom of the cup.)
Then put the cup on the glue and let it sit for a day. (Waiting is the hardest part of doing this craft!)
Alas, there isn’t a picture of the cup sitting on the plate waiting for the glue to dry. Somehow my picture taking was neglected while we were doing the craft. Sheesh!
Next, turn the cup and saucer upside down.
Now squirt glue in the spot that you sanded.
Press the copper cap into the glue. (The cap is what holds the saucer onto the pipe.)
My granddaughters wanted teaspoons glued to their saucer. So, glue them we did. (Of course the teaspoons came from the thrift store, too.)
Let the glue dry. (About another 24 hours.)
My granddaughters were really happy with their bird feeders!
Their father pushed the copper pipe into the dirt in a flower bed. Then, he pushed the cap (that was glued to the bottom of the saucer) onto the pipe.
One granddaughter filler her cup with water and put bird seed around the saucer. (You can’t tell it in the picture below but the top one really is filled with water.)
The other granddaughter put seed in the cup and on the saucer.
Aren’t the feeders lovely?
Let’s pause here for a moment to talk about grandsons and bird feeders.
I dare say that they would not be thrilled to make one with designs similar to the ones on the tea cups that my granddaughters used.
There are tea cups that have simple patterns like gold or silver around the rim of the cup and plate. And ones that are just plain white. You could use those instead.
Or, you could go to the dollar store and get a colored mug and saucer there.
I don’t want your grandsons left out from doing this craft! They would love it, too!
And of course I had to make a bird feeder. Mine is in the picture below.
