(Note: I was given free copies of these kids books to review from Flashlight Press but all of my opinions are my own.)
Reading books to my grandchildren is one of the best things in the world. I love the time spent together and the snuggles. And I hope that I’m helping them develop a love for reading.
I need to share a little back store first before I talk about these awesome kids books.
Our youngest son loved the book Are You My Mother. He wanted me to read it to him several times a day. Every day for about 2 years.
I got to where I hated that book!
When I got the board book Are You My Monster from Flashlight Press, memories of Are You My Mother flooded my mind. Mentally, I cringed. Would I dislike the monster book because of my feelings about Are You My Mother?
In Are You My Monster, a little boy draws a picture of a monster. As different monsters come to him, he compares them with his drawing to see if they are his very own personal one.
This is my favorite monster.
Alas, it isn’t the little boy’s monster . . .
The boy finally finds his monster and is able to go to sleep.
In my humble opinion, this book is FAR better than Are You My Mother. Much, much better.
The storyline is much better. The illustrations are outstanding. I think kids will love it. But best of all, I believe it will not drive a parent crazy to read it over and over and over to their kids!
Also, this book is sneaky. Children learn their colors and improve their matching skills while being entertained by this cleverly illustrated book.
What an awesome book!
You can get Are You My Monster from Amazon for $7.00.
In How I Met My Monster, Ethan reaches under his bed for a toy truck. Instead, he finds a note that says, “Monsters! Meet here for final test.”
Ethan is sure that this is just a trick that his parents are playing on him in an effort to keep him in bed. (I think parents can identify with that!)
Then, Ethan sees 5 sets of eyes peering out from the dark under his bed.
Eeek! There really are monsters!
The monsters come out . . .
. . . and compete to see if they could become Ethan’s monster.
The little monster named Gabe wins the contest. Hurray!
Gabe and Ethan become bedtime buddies. They crawl into bed and (thankfully) fall asleep.
Such a delightful book!

I Love My Dragon is the third book that I got from Flashlight Press.
In this board book, a little boy does everything with his dragon — swimming, eating snacks, bowling (my grandkids loved that page!), and babysitting the boy’s little brother.
This is my favorite page in the book.
It’s my favorite because our sons played the drums in their high school marching band and because I love reading. (Notice the facial expression on the mother’s and sister’s face. I can identify with that!)
The book ends with the little boy snuggling with the dragon.
Another terrific book!

Kudos to Howard McWilliam for creating such delightful illustrations. His wonderful pictures are the secret sauce for making these books so awesome!
Hats off to authors Amanda Noll and Jodi Moore for their wordsmithing skills. Writing picture books is difficult and they did a mighty fine job!
I highly recommend these three monster books. They will make a superb addition to your personal library of kids books!
