Is it hard for you to find crafts to make with your tween and teenaged granddaughters?
If so, I have the perfect thing — lip balm and lip gloss.
Girls are naturally interested in make-up so this will naturally appeal to them.
Lip balm will help keep their lips from getting chapped and lip gloss will add a sparkle to their lips (either by itself or on top of lipstick).
Let’s start with lip gloss first, shall we? It’s the easiest.
Super easy.
Lip Gloss
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Vaseline (I used a generic brand)
- Kook-Aid
- microwave safe cup or bowl
- make-up containers
First, spoon some vaseline into your microwave safe cup or bowl. (I used a plastic spoon because I threw it away when I was finished. I was too lazy to wash up a metal spoon.)
Microwave it on high for about 1 minute to make the Vaseline soft and warm.
Sprinkle a little bit of Kool-Aid on top and stir really good.
Pour it into the little make-up containers and you’re done. See? I told you it was super easy to make!
Let’s now talk a little bit about the make-up containers.
I didn’t find any at Jo-Anns. Nor at Walmart.
I found some at the local health food store, BUT! They were super small. They held only 2 grams/2 milliliters.
The ones that I used held 10 grams/ 10 milliliters. That might sound big but I thought that it was the perfect size! Look at them in the picture of the supplies needed for lip gloss to give you some perspective on their size.
Lip Balm
Here’s what you’ll need:
- white beeswax pellets
- coconut oil
- lipstick
- make-up containers
- small jam jar
- saucepan
Let me talk about beeswax before I tell you how to make lip balm. (Boy howdy! I sure want to talk a lot today, don’t I?)
While I was at the local health food store checking out their containers, I looked at their beeswax. I bought a 2 ounce bar.
On the way home, I got thinking. (That’s how I do my thinking. After the fact.)
The bar of beeswax was a golden color. That would affect the coloring of the balm. I didn’t want brown lip balm! So, I returned that beeswax the next day.
I ordered the white beeswax pellets online and I’m so glad I did. I was very happy with the colors of my lip balm.
Okay. Now for the directions.
Put 3 teaspoons of beeswax in a small jam jar. (This was the amount that made a balm that wasn’t super hard nor gooey soft!)
Put water in the saucepan and put the jam jar in the saucepan to make a double boiler.
Put the saucepan on the stove over high heat. (I used high heat because I was too impatient to wait for the beeswax to melt on a lower setting.) I used a plastic knife to stir as the beeswax was melting because I was too lazy to clean up a regular knife. (Man oh man, I’m lazy!)
When the beeswax was all melted, I put in 2 tablespoons of coconut oil and stirred until that was melted.
I got a tube of lipstick and scraped some off with my plastic knife and put the lipstick in the melted mixture. I stirred until that was melted in.
Then, I waited a little bit for the mixture to cool and then poured into the make-up containers.
Don’t let it cool too long or else you’ll have to put it back in the double boiler and remelt the mixture.
Let’s do some more talking. I have seen ‘recipes’ for lip balm that say to use Kool-Aid for the coloring. I don’t know what I am doing wrong but I could not get the Kool-Aid to mix in the lip balm. Batch after batch after batch it wouldn’t mix in good. So, take it from me. Don’t use Kool-Aid for lip balm — unless you like to be frustrated!
I think they turned out really pretty. Don’t you?
