I read something really interesting today about struggling readers. Do you know what the difference is between a third grade student who starts and ends the school year as a struggling reader and a third grade student who starts out struggling but ends the year reading at grade level?
Six minutes.
The one who ends up succeeding reads 6 minutes more per day than the one who remains a struggling student.
Six minutes.
Reading 6 more minutes is within that struggling reader’s reach. It’s not overwhelming.
And, here’s another statistic to think about. In that longitudinal study, almost twenty-five percent of those third graders with below-basic reading skills did not graduate from high school by the age of 19.
Six minutes.
Dear Readers, do you have grandchildren who are reading at their grade level? If so, may I suggest that you do all in your power to help them read 6 minutes more a day?
Get on your phone. Call that grandchild. Have her read to you over the phone for 6 minutes.
Just six minutes.
A fun thing you could do with those grandchildren (or ANY of your grandchildren) it to make an easy corner bookmark. A spiffy, bright, colorful bookmark brightens a reader’s day!
Here are the supplies that you’ll need to make that spiffy bookmark:
- An envelope
- Scrapbook paper
- Scissors
- Glue
Measure 3 inches from one corner on one side of the envelope and make a mark. Measure 3 inches from the same corner going in the other direction.
Then, draw a straight line between the marks and cut along the line to get a triangle shape.
Use that to trace the triangle shape on scrapbook paper and cut out two pieces.
Glue the scrapbook paper onto the triangle cut from the envelope.
Ta da! There’s your spiffy bookmark.
You could also use the washi tape and make a corner bookmark.
Cut out a corner of an envelope and then added strips of the Duct Tape to one side. Wrap any extra Duct Tape to the other side of the bookmark.
Add Duct Tape to the other side. Trim the tape that goes beyond the edge.
Duct Tape makes the bookmark sturdy — and shiny!
Awesome!

What a simple, wonderful idea! I’ve featured it today at the TFT link party!
That is so exciting! You’ve made my day. Thank you!
I love it when one generation takes an active roll in another generation…. especially when a generation is skipped in between. This can go in either direction. As a child, I always loved the elderly because they were always more gently and kindly towards me…. Today, I try to be the same. This warms my heart and I hope others will heed your awesome tip that can change lives forever.
As one of those ‘elderly’ people, I can identify with being gentle and kind to children. We understand just how precious kids are (especially our grandkids!) and want to love and support them! Thanks for stopping by!
That is helpful.
