(NOTE: I was given a copy of this book to review but all opinions are my own.)
Moonlight. Softer than the sun. Soothing. Gentle. Calming.
Soothing, gentle, and calm also describes the children’s picture book Moonlight by Stephen Savage.
And that is what parents want — and need — at bedtime for their kids.
You remember what it was like to get your kids to settle down and go to bed, right? (Or was that too long ago?) They refused to stop playing. They bounced off the walls. (You climbed them.) They insisted on a drink — multiple times. They whined for a snack. And then another drink. They needed their favorite stuffed animal . . . and another one and another one. Oh my.
One of the best ways to counter all of that energy is to read kids a bedtime story. And when you have a picture book that is as delightful and soothing as Moonlight, the job is easier. Much easier!
(Since I’m not around my grandkids at bedtime, I read to them during the day.)
Daytime. Night time. Kids will love this book. Trust me. (See, even my thirteen-year-old and my nine-year-old granddaughters enjoy it.)
The illustrations in this book are unique. The author/illustrator used a linotype method. Linotype is a printmaking technique that uses linoleum. (Yes, the popular kitchen flooring of days gone by.) A design is cut into the linoleum. Paint is spread over it and then the linoleum is pressed onto paper.
Mr. Savage uses various shades of blue with accents of white to create the images, the lights, and the shadows. What an awesome job!
So, let’s talk a wee bit now about the story.
The author gives interesting attributes to the moonlight. It swings, slithers, drifts, catches, hops, and slides as it makes its way through the night.
(Don’t you just love the crocodile lurking in the water?)
It snuggles up to a child and then fades away at the dawning of a new day . . .
. . . with the promise it will come back.
I love this book! My grandkids love it. I bet you will, too. Hats off to Savage for creating such lyrical text and beautiful pictures. I predict this could become a grandchild’s favorite bedtime story.
You can get Moonlight by Stephen Savage on Amazon for $17.99.

Holy cow! You’re the author! And you commented on my review! Holy cow! You’ve made my day. (BTW, I saw the video of you on YouTube about getting the Geisel award. That was hilarious!) Thanks so much for taking time out of your busy day to comment.
