NOTE: I was given a copy of the book The Magic of Unicorns for review. However, my opinions are my own.
My granddaughters are enthralled with unicorns. They have unicorns on t-shirts and pajamas. They love pictures, movies, books, and treats with unicorns. Let’s give a cheer for unicorns, folks!
So when I was asked if I would be interested in reviewing a book about unicorns, I jumped at the chance. (Well, not literally. The days of actual jumping with my grandma body are in the past . . . )
The Magic of Unicorns by Gina L. Grandi, and illustrated by Ximena Jeria, captures the heart and the imagination of children!
My granddaughters and I loved the pictures. They are so colorful and appealing! Isn’t this one wonderful?
And this one is, too. (Wouldn’t kids love finding a unicorn hiding behind a tree in their neighborhood?)
My granddaughters loved learning about unicorns in China, Japan, Asia, and Africa. We read about what unicorns eat, where they live, their magical powers, and unicorn folklore from that country.
We learned that unicorn hunters would use girls in their efforts to catch a unicorn. (That’s because girls are so kind and gentle and that attracts the unicorns.)
And best of all that the hippogriff is the unicorn’s cousin! (Natalie just finished reading one of the Harry Potter books that had a hippogriff in it so she loved learning this.)
We also read what kids can do to improve their odds of meeting a unicorn — practicing compassion and being out in nature.
Different activity pages came with the book. For one, we had to spot the unique unicorn. (Boy howdy! Say THAT ten times fast!) That was challenging!
For another activity we had to figure out the difference between two pictures. Emma spotted some of the differences right away. She was way observant!
And of course there was a coloring page. Wahoo!
And if Natalie and Emma can color unicorns, so can Isaac. Sort of . . .
Did you know that there is a National Unicorn Day? It is April 9th. That day is past. Sigh. However, the author points out that you can also celebrate it on the ninth of any month. Or the nineteenth. Or any day that ends in “ay.” Awesome!
I highly recommend this book. It’s beautiful. It’s shiny. It’s informative. It’s fun. It captures the reader’s attention. Any child (or adult) who loves unicorns will love this book. I give it two thumbs up!
The Magic of Unicorns by Gina L. Grandi is available online and in stores now for $14.
