Sometimes it’s hard to find a craft that tween and teen girls like. They feel grown-up so they stick up their nose at crafts that they consider juvenile.
Well, they won’t think that this is a kiddie craft. They’ll think it’s awesome — and they’ll love making it.
This galaxy necklace is super easy to make and is inexpensive. (That’s a bonus for grandma!) Plus, girls will love wearing it! Here are the supplies you’ll need:
- Rectangle glass cabochon (or glass tile pendant)
- Jewelry bail
- E6000 glue
- Necklace chain
- Mod Podge
- Glitter
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Paintbrush
- Galaxy pictures
First, you’ll need to print out a laser copy of one of my free galaxy pictures. (If you use an ink jet printer, the picture will smear when you use Mod Podge.)
I have 3 galaxy pictures that you can choose from. The picture below shows the galaxy picture in the first PDF file. (This is what I used for the necklaces I made.) Click here to download it.
The picture below shows the galaxy picture in the second PDF file. Click here to download it.

Let’s pause here for a moment to talk about the glass tile pendant that I used.
I had some left over from another craft that I did several years ago. I purchased them on-line because I couldn’t find what I wanted in my local stores. Alas, when I went online to make sure they were still available, that company is no longer in business.
I still can’t find them locally. Rats!
Maybe you won’t be able to find some locally either. But do not despair! I found some on Etsy. (There were some on Amazon but I didn’t like them as well as the ones on Etsy.)
When looking for them, use the search term ‘glass rectangle cabochon’ or ‘glass tile pendant.’ Don’t get plastic ones. They are ‘milky’ and are not clear like the glass ones. Also, make sure that the back of the cabochon is flat.
Okay. Now let’s get down to the business of making a galaxy necklace!
Place your cabochon over the spot of the picture that you want to use. Trace around it with a pencil.
Cut out the shape that you traced.
Spread some Mod Podge on the back of the cabochon.
Pour a teeny bit of glitter in you hand. Sprinkle an itsy bitsy amount on the Mod Podge. This adds ‘sparkle’ to the stars in your galaxy. (If you get too much, you can always wash it off and start over.) Let the Mod Podge dry.
Spread more Mod Podge on the back of your cabochon. Place your galaxy picture face down on the back. Press firmly so there aren’t any air bubbles between the picture and the cabochon. Trim away any paper that sticks over the edge. Let it dry.
Spread Mod Podge on the back of the cabochon. This protects the paper from ripping when wearing or storing your necklace.
Add a dab of E6000 glue on the back of your cabochon at the top edge.
Put your jewelry bail on the glue and press down. Make sure it is in the center because if you don’t your pendant will hang crooked on your necklace chain. Since the glue doesn’t dry immediately, you’ll have time to make sure it’s centered. Let the glue dry.
Here are the finished galaxy pendants. They turned out really pretty! (So much prettier in real life than in the picture. Trust me.)
Now put your pendant on a necklace chain and it’s ready for weaaring!
