Flag Day is June 14.
That’s this coming Sunday.
Want a patriotic craft that is super easy for your grandchildren?
Make these red, white, and blue luminaries in 3 simple steps. Your grandkids will be pleased at how easy and fun they are.
(You’ll be pleased, too, Grandma!)
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Epsom salt
- Mod Podge
- red and blue food coloring
- sponge paint brush
- small glass candle holder
Step one: color the salt. Put some Epsom salt into three small bowls. Add several drops of blue food coloring in one bowl, several drops of red in another bowl, and leave the Epsom salt in the third bowl white. Stir so that the color is mixed in really good.
Step two: Mod Podge a candle holder. Using a sponge paint brush, spread Mod Podge all over the candle holder.
Step three: cover with colored salt. Sprinkle the Epsom salt over the Mod Podge. Cover one candle holder with red-colored Epsom salt, one with blue-colored salt, and one with plain white Epsom salt.
Wow that was easy!
You’ve got a set of patriotic luminaries!
See how easy that was? I bet your grandchildren finished them in 15 minutes — or less!
You’ll want to use these patriotic luminaries for Flag Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, President’s Day, Veteran’s Day — or any time that you want to inspire your grandchildren to be patriotic.
Way to go, you clever grandma, you!

Wow – that was so easy! It would work for any holiday, really, if you just have the right color food dye. Definitely pinning:) (visiting from #CelebrateTheUSA)

Such a perfect patriotic craft! Gotta pin this… for July 4th!
Thank you for sharing in the GRAND Social, my friend!
I bought some votives like this for my daughter’s wedding last year, but I didn’t even consider I could make them myself – I’m hanging on to this instructions! Thanks for sharing at Talented Tuesday!
Staci,
Your daughter’s wedding? In your picture, you look so young that it’s hard to believe you have a married daughter!! Thanks for dropping by.
All the best,
Nina
Those are so cute!! Do you not need to put a layer of modge podge on top of the salt??
Hi Sheena,
I didn’t put a layer of Mod Podge over the salt…and they seem to be just fine.
All the best,
Nina
These are awesome! I would have never thought of using espom salt! Thanks for sharing
Hi Marie,
Thanks for dropping by and commenting! I’m glad you like the luminaries!
All the best,
Nina
I love this! I can’t wait to try it – even without a grandchild. And not just for Flag Day or the 4th. Red and green or blue and silver for December holidays, orange for Halloween, or to match any table decor. Thanks for posting.
Keating,
You’ve caught the vision of making these different colors to match different holidays! Since I bought a huge sack of Epsom salt, I will probably be making lots of these during the coming year.
All the best,
Nina
