Sometimes people think that they aren’t artistic enough for a craft that involves painting. (Me.)
But this craft doesn’t require any artistic skill.
None whatsoever!
Can you squeeze a bottle of paint?
Great!
Then you’ve got what it takes to do this pour painting craft. Phew.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Terra cotta pot
- Three colors of acrylic craft paint
- Spray can of clear varnish
- Plastic cups
- Newspapers or butcher paper
- Bedding plants
Once again I forgot to take a picture of the needed supplies. (Do you, Dear Readers, see a pattern here?)
First, spray the terra cotta pot with a good coat of clear varnish. Let it dry. Spray on another coat and let dry. This seals the pot so that the water won’t make the paint bubble up and peal off once you plant flowers in the pot. (Don’t ask me how I know . . . )
Next, spread newspaper or butcher paper on your working surface.
Turn a stack of 5-6 plastic cups upside down. Place the terra cotta pot upside down over the cups. The cups will hold the pot up so that the paint can drip off of it.
Do not remove the sticker from the bottom of the pot. The sticker will keep the paint from flowing inside the pot.
Select one color of acrylic pain. Now squirt!
Squirt a lot of paint along the outer edge of the bottom of the pot. The paint will flow over the edge and down the sides of the pot.
See? Isn’t pour painting easy?
Some paint may drip off the bottom edge of your pot. That’s just fine.
Select your next color and squirt it along the edge of the pot.
Squirt on your third color.
Now comes the hardest part. Waiting.
Once the paint is dry, plant bedding flowers in your pot.
And there you have it! A painted terra cotta pot to brighten up a patio or front step.

We made these one year for Mother’s day! It was so much fun. One of my sons turned his pot on the side and dripped paint that way– it looked pretty neat!
I love the idea of putting the pot on its side to paint it. That’s an awesome idea! Thanks for sharing.
